Nail art has been a part of Asian cultures for centuries. In ancient China, for instance, the aristocracy grew long fingernails to enhance their beauty and demonstrate wealth.
Their long nails distinguished them from the peasant class, as manual labour is virtually impossible with excessively long fingernails.
To prevent breakage, long nails were protected by elaborate nail guards or nail covers, crafted from silver or gold, and adorned with engraving, jewels and decorative enameling.
